Robbie Caldwell “Resigns.”

Here’s the thing about Vanderbilt. It’s an impossible scenario to win on a consistent basis. They don’t play with the same athletic standards of a Kentucky, let alone an Auburn. And the one coach who managed to get some traction? He up and left in July.

Into the breach stepped Robbie Caldwell. And after a season marred by injury and some poor play? Out of the breach stopped Caldwell

“Having the opportunity to be Vanderbilt’s head football coach has been a dream come true,” Caldwell said, “and I greatly appreciated the chance to serve, and I gave it my best. However, after a lot of reflection, I’ve realized it is time for me to step aside and let someone else pick up the hard work and efforts of our staff.”

The only question left here is did he walk or was he pushed? Vanderbilt’s team was absolutely riddled with injuries this year. Warren Norman, Zac Stacy, and Robert Marve all missed extended periods of time. And when you consider that the Vice Chancellor David Williams talked about how the staff led Vanderbilt to a new level of play?

You have to wonder if Caldwell was going to be fired if he didn’t just walk away.

Vanderbilt has some sort of vision issue right now. Give a coach eight weeks to prepare for an SEC season and have no luck with injuries? You force this guy out at the end of the season, and you expect your first choice (Gus Malzahn by the way) to join the team?

Remember the bowl year, Vandy. You aren’t going to sniff 6 wins for a long, long time.
