One last game for the National Championship. Bring. It. On.
BCS Championship 2011 Prediction Pick: Oregon vs. Auburn
If you’re not fired up for this game? You’re on the wrong website. You have two supercharged offenses led by a Heisman finalist and Cam Newton. It goes without saying that Cam Newton is awesome. You will see a lot of misdirection. And you will see one tremendous half of football.
The strength of both teams? The run game. For Oregon? LaMichael James is a special running back. Kenjon Balmer is strong as well. And with the mobility of Derron Thomas? This offense is powerful. Sure? Auburn has been able to stop some stud running backs. But this scheme for Oregon is not exactly the scheme Auburn is used to.
And Oregon? They’re not exactly the sort of defense Auburn has faced before. Outside of Casey Matthews, this defense does not have any sort of cachet. But do not doubt its strength. In a one-game scenario? Size matters little. Especially where you have a defense that can come at you in waves.
Granted, Cam Newton is a special player, and there will be more yardage than Oregon usually gives up. But this is the team that put away Stanford. And this is a team that is great at limiting Red Zone opportunities to three points.
The X-Factor? The battle between Nick Fairley and Derron Thomas. When Derron is healthy? He adds a dimension of mobility that adds a good score or two to Oregon’s point total. And if Nick Fairley hits his famous tiger suplex? That will give Auburn the win.
But I will write my final paragraph as if Nick Fairley doesn’t hit Derron Thomas in the ankle with a shillelagh. Because that would be totes illegal. And like a Nick Pugh chop block? It would never happen.
The over for this game is still stuck somewhere between 73 and 74. I don’t see how that’s possible. Oregon’s offense is quite youthful, and as we saw in the Iron Bowl, Auburn is a team that can be limited for a quarter or two. I feel like I’m about to turn heel on the boss man, my bandwagon team, and you fans. But the one thing I learned is that if a game looks like it’s going to be close? Trust the better defense. Oregon 38, Auburn 34.
I can feel your hate for me. It feeds me. It makes me strong.
