Could Ryan Mallett go into Round 2?
In doing research about the NFL Draft, my expectations were such that there would be four quarterbacks that would be drafted in the first round. And perhaps, Cam Newton would be the bottom quarterback on the list. But right now, there’s a certain sect of self-styled expert that belives Ryan Mallett is going to fall out of the first round.
Now that being said? Mallett is a high-upside prospect. The arm he has is most definitely strong enough to deserve the nickname he gave it, and he can make some spectacular throws. But that being said? There are three reasons to doubt Ryan Mallett’s future.
First of all, there are certain coaches who absolutely cannot develop a pro quarterback without an outside pro influence. Jeff Tedford is one. And Bobby Petrino has not developed a good pro quarterback amongst the several that have been drafted. Could Mallett be an outlier? Absolutely. But it’s a strike against him.
But you know what’s worrisome? Mallett’s footwork. Any quarterback with bad footwork has a strike against their developmental future. And Mallett? Even the highlight video shows that he cannot consistently throw a pass with two feet on the ground.
That right there causes his passes to sail. And that right there is why some wags would deign to compare him to a Derek Anderson. Add to that a Joe Flacco/Kerry Collinsish sort of weakness in the face of a strong pass rush? And we see where Ryan Mallett could fall into the second round.
Not that it wouldn’t be the worst thing. Say Mallett lands on a team that would consider him a luxury. You’d give him a year or three to develop. And with his arm? He could potentially be the same sort of exception that Jeff Tedford’s exception turned out to be.
Maybe a little writ smaller, but still.
