I Hate Signing Day
This is the time of year when I lose my blogging fastball. In the post Senior Bowl pre-signing day morass where the only thing that really seems to matter is the capricious whims of a man-child and what hat he is fixing to put on.
This isn’t going to be an opinion piece railing against the evils of recruiting. Last year had a lot of intrigue among the newcomers. Freshmen were sensational, and lest we forget Cam Newton and Nick Fairley playing mercenary for a national championship. There were quite a few new stars this year, and there should be quite a few next year.
That being said? I’m just someone who needs to see some on field results before I can get truly excited. Jadevon Clowney may be breaking fools in high school, but until he breaks an SEC left tackle, I will not be joining any he could be playing for the Panthers right now talk. Long time between now and the 2014 NFL Draft.
And this is the sort of thing that is generally a crap shoot to begin with anyway. Nick Fairley was originally the 32nd best Offensive Tackle in 2007. D.J. Stafford was supposed to be the anchor for Kentucky’s defensive line that never actually did show up. And outside of Eric Berry, Rocky Top’s excellent recruiting class from 2007? It never really bothered to show up.
So, I’m not exactly one to get fired up for this time of year.
All in all? You’re probably not going to get me to comment further on a Jadevon Clowney or a Jeff Driskel. It’s not my stride.
Except for Tre Mason. Anyone who’s in the bloodlines of De La Soul is all right by me. They were awesome.
And now you have the video explained to you, eh?
