Winner!
NFL Combine Winners and Losers
Hey guys, in between real life and the fact that the stupid WordPress ate this post already, I’m going to try this again. It’s probably going to be worse. But hey, here’s some winners and losers for the NFL Combine.
Julio Jones (WR-Alabama)
This is a man who most definitely won the day. Julio Jones was almost a lock for the #14 pick to the Rams before the combine. But the fact of the matter is, when you run a 4.39-40 yard dash and have one of the best broad jumps in the last ten years? He just made certain there was a conversation for which receiver gets drafted first.
Ryan Mallett (QB-Arkansas)
Narratives are important in sports. How you get framed can matter. Ryan Mallett did nothing to change the debate. The meltdown with the media. The fact he didn’t do any running drills. Ryan Mallett can make all the throws, but he’s not going to make them as a 1st round pick.
Randall Cobb (WR-Kentucky)
Cobb changed his narrative. He was always the sort of guy who was deemed more quick than fast. But a timed 40 at 4.48 means that he’s a full tenth of a second faster than expected. Perhaps he’s not a first round pick. But that being said? He may be a targeted pick between 33-40.
Weslye Saunders (TE-South Carolina)
The importance of the NFL Combine is that it’s the last (and for some people only) major way to improve their draft chances. If you don’t play during the season and then cannot work out due to an injury? You may be able to improve your stock, but nothing nearly as major as previously hoped.
Mario Fannin (RB-Auburn)
Fannin was lost in the shuffle with the emergence of Michael Dyer. He was graded out as a 7th round running back if he was lucky. Then came his 40 yard dash. Fun combine fact? You can count the number of sub 4.4 40′s on one hand. And Mario Fannin? 5’11″-230-4.38 is a very tantalizing prospect for teams that could use a running back. He won the combine like I won this blog post.
Greg McElroy (QB-Alabama)
What? You say. He killed the Wonderlic test! You exclaim. Don’t you want a smart quarterback? You question.
Well, the scary counter intuitive fact is that there is no Ivy League in the NFL, and like Myron Rolle last year, intelligence can work against you with some in the NFL. If you just did some form of slapping yourself in the head? Yeah, I did too.
