Nick Fairley vs. Marcell Dareus

A defensive lineman that's too aggressive? I thought this was America!
Nick Fairley vs. Marcell Dareus
The two top defensive tackles available? Yes. Both potential top 5 picks? Absolutely. But in the battle between top of the trench warfare, you’re going to find another reason why the whole scouting game may just be a trick of the mind. Why? Because to paraphrase Walk Hard.
Wrong kid’s first.
That’s right. In the interim between bowl season and the NFL Draft, Marcell Dareus has found his way into the discussion for a potential #1 pick, while rumors have Nick Fairley slipping all the way down to eight. Why?
Because there are questions about his intangibles. Not the dirty play, not his general level of inexperience. But they think he coasted on natural talent alone last year. Which is baffling to me. Why?
Nick Fairley has a killer motor. The best motor some have seen since the days when Glenn Dorsey was a terror in the middle of the line. And if you think about it logically? If he wasn’t at his physical peak in the SEC, wouldn’t that mean he can only get better?
I mean, who won the National Championship for Auburn? It wasn’t Cam Newton. It wasn’t Michael Dyer. It was Nick Fairley. And if you’re passing on him just because he’s not as strong as he could be? Isn’t that what a strength coach is for?
Not saying that Dareus is a poor prospect. He’s big and strong, and has good speed after all. But that being said? His motor is nothing like Fairley’s. And he hasn’t been the sort of guy who can play for a series without being changed out. He’s in no form or fashion a better player than Fairley.
And yet he’ll be drafted earlier. Rant over.
