Did LSU pay for Patrick Peterson?

After last years scandal-ridden off season in college football with agents running rampant, it seems as if the new hotness scandal goes by the name of Willie Lyles. Yahoo reported that he received $25,000 from Oregon weeks after a protege of his, Lache Seastrunk, signed with Oregon.

What seemed lost in this was the fact that another protege of his, Trevon Randle, signed with LSU, and the Tigers made a payment to Lyles as well. Randle was a three-star recruit and did not have near the cachet of a Seastrunk. And besides? Six thousand dollars, in a world of corruption and bribery, seems comically small.

But then Van Malone talked to Kelly Naqi, and all of the sudden, to coin a phrase. Business was about to pick up. Why? Because the former Texas A&M coach made mention of a phone call he received from Willie Lyles. It seems as if Lyles had an intention to make a fair bit of coin off of the best cornerback prospect in the NFL Draft by far.

“A few days after [Peterson's] visit, Will calls and says, ‘If you want this kid, there are other schools that want this kid as well. They’re willing to pay a certain amount of money, around the $80,000 mark,’” Malone said. “He said that was something we were going to have to beat as a university to be able to obtain the services of this kid.”

That’s the damning quote.  And if you know Pat Peterson’s history (a decommit from Miami) as well as LSU’s (did I mention the fact that they paid money to Lyles for the Trevon Randle commit) you don’t have to be a self-styled hater to believe that they paid for Peterson. But the problem here?

Burden of proof. Unless Lyles has some sort of road to Damascus epiphany or gets a strong advance for a book deal? There’s no real motivation for him to say yes, yes I did steer kids to schools. So this is out there, but if it cannot be proven? It’s just going to be the sort of death by a thousand papercuts sort of thing.

Because Will Lyles has alleged connections to Auburn (Trovon Reed) and Alabama (Trent Richardson) as well.

Entirely Too Late Update: “My dad and I were in Houston visiting one of his friends and he suggested that we go look at A&M.”

The author of that article confirmed that the family friend was indeed Will Lyles.
