Stephen Garcia Suspended Indefinitely
In the midst of a turbulent offseason where Jadeveon Clowney got mistaken for a burglar, their new kick returner may just have been their basketball teams leading scorer, and Stephen Garcia found himself suspended yet again for spring practice. News out of Columbia may be leading to a major change.
Details are officially sketchy, but what was a suspension for only spring ball was extended by Athletic Director Eric Hyman today. The requisite speak about how playing for the team is a privilege and not a right occurred. But apparently, the tale of just how Stephen Garcia was suspended is as simple as this. (via @johnwhittle)
Just spoke with a source confirming what is being said. Garcia showed up at a Values seminar for USC athletes (but not all teams/athletes ere required to attend.) It started at 7 pm and I’m told he showed up already passed [sic] drunk.
So what does this mean for South Carolina? For one, Connor Shaw gets an opportunity to run as the #1 quarterback. He has been Spurrier’s favorite since he came to Columbia. He’s not a lock to be the #1 starter, as Dylan Thompson has had a strong spring. But he’s going to go into summer as the #1 starter.
And as for Garcia? I have to be honest. I don’t know how he’s going to come back. You read his quotes from his press conference after his suspension, especially as he said “nothing like this was ever going to happen again.” But that being said, the problems that he has seem to be something beyond a simple immaturity factor. For his sake, I hope he finds it.
