Previewing the SEC: Phil Steele

One of the most preeminent analysts of College Football has come out with his All-SEC teams this week. And as we are interested in previews? Steele’s is as good of a place to start. So let’s look at the first and second teams, shall we? See which teams are built for speed.

Mississippi State: 0 (The only thing that surprises me is that Chris Reif didn’t even warrant a mention. Tyler Wilson is second team based on one start versus Auburn.)
Auburn: 1 (Steele actually thinks Auburn’s going to be below Ole Miss in the SEC. I’m inclined to disagree.)
Kentucky: 2 (Linemen dot Steele’s 3rd and 4th teams, but as the narrative goes? The Wildcats will go as far as the defense takes them. And they will be dead if Trevathan gets hurt for an extended period.)
Tennessee: 2 (A richer version of Kentucky. Though the direct penalty of Tyler Wilson being on the second team is that Tyler Bray ends up on the third team. )
Ole Miss: 3 (Brandon Bolden has 40% of an all conference line to run behind. But Kentrell Lockett is literally all they have on defense. Though I am excited about one of their JUCO recruits. Consider that. A tease.)
Vanderbilt: 3 (The most experienced team in the SEC. With good health on the offensive line? Warren Norman may be this years Knile Davis memorial Running Back that emerges for me to leap upon the badwagon.)
Florida: 4 (It’s weird how it fell off so quickly. The SEC East leader in the 1st and second team has 7 reps. Florida, even adding a third and fourth team? Has 8.)
LSU: 4 (If LSU fails this year, they fail because they missed on recruiting. They have a lot of hype this year, but by Florida’s metric? LSU doesn’t even match Arkansas’s 1st and 2nd teams by all four of their teams.)
South Carolina: 5 (The best defensive line in the SEC + Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffrey = Division Championship Repeat? Signs point to maybe.)
Georgia: 7 (Add in another 8 players on Steele’s third and fourth team, and the fact is that on paper, this is the most talented SEC East team. (And a deeper team than Arkansas.) No pressure, Mark Richt. None whatsoever.)
Arkansas: 11 (Though all the while I’ve been stunned by Tyler Wilson’s being a second team quarterback? The fact that Greg Childs, Joe Adams, and Jarius Wright are three of the SEC’s best 10 receivers. So yeah. It could happen.
Alabama: 13 (Even with the unfortunate passing of Aaron Douglas? This is a very strong offensive line. Trent Richardson has a real chance to add another Stiffarm guy to be presented at a Tuscaloosa Wal-Mart.)
