Who will be the SEC’s new Punching Bag?
With yesterdays news that Jim Tressel was essentially saying la-la-la-la I can’t hear you while his players were breaking NCAA rules that got A.J. Green suspended for a month for the better part of the last ten years, and the pre-requisite resignation from the man of the sweatervest? SEC fans aren’t going to have the Buckeyes to kick around for much longer. But as nature abhors a vacuum? A new punching bag must emerge. Who is my pick to click? Read on.
1) Oklahoma Sooners
In 2008, they were the Oregon Ducks in the BCS shootout scenario that turned offensively disappointing. And outside of Alabama, this is the team that the money is on to make a run for the BCS title. The fact of the matter is that while they’ll have some challenges along the way (road trips to Florida State and Oklahoma State), this seems like a team that can make a run to the BCS, where they have only beaten a historically bad Big East Champion, since their National Championship game. Thus? Losing two national championship games in four years would be a nice prerequisite for punching bag status.
2) Oregon Ducks
But then again, Ohio State lost two consecutive BCS title games. And it’s not impossible that we’re going to see a one loss team play for the national title this year. So why not Oregon? They have a lot of skill coming back in their running game. And in the Pac-12? USC can’t defend, and Stanford is a complete unknown that needs to rebuild its O-Line. Oregon could very easily get back to the National Championship.
3) Wisconsin Badgers
Not this year. The Big 10 champion is very likely 11-2 at best. But there is an opening for a new Big Ten power to lose to the SEC on most occasions, and surprisingly it’s Wisconsin. They have a nice list of commitments for 2012, and if by some miracle of miracles Russell Wilson chooses Wisconsin over a chance at a repeat at Auburn?
Badgers may be on the Menu for the SEC.
