Mississippi State Season Preview Prediction Picks
Lost amidst the controversy of being the school that was not allowed to name their own price and save was the fact that the Bulldogs were strong. They were the first to nearly take down the National Champions. They made the Top 25 for the first time in a decade. And they just destroyed Michigan. Can they beat 9-4? Well…
1) Chris Reif will continue to grow in his final year as a spread quarterback. He’ll end up with about 2800 yards of total offense and a combined 26 touchdowns against 8 interceptions. He will make his crowning achievement in November, despite getting tripped up early.
2) Vick Ballard will only rush for 954 yards and 17 touchdowns. No one will be impressed. Because come on. That’s just not good numbers. Seriously. I’m not being sarcastic.
3) Because LaDarius Perkins will be a strong backup for a second season. I mean, 750 yards on 7 yards per carry is nothing to sneeze at. The offense is going to be pretty, pretty good in Starkville.
4) Between Chris Hughes and Brandon Maye, the Bulldogs linebackers will remain a competent piece of a generally solid defense. Not Alabama level, but certainly in the second echelon. Maye will get 127 tackles.
5) Mississippi State will pull the upset of the year when Alabama, with the #1 ranking and outlasting LSU, will fall to a tanned, rested, and ready Mississippi State 31-27.
6) The early part of Mississippi State’s schedule will trip them up. They’ll get trapped by Auburn with LSU looming large right after. And they’ll lose to LSU right after. But after that? They just lose one more. Can they surpass last year? They’ll get a Juanurary 2nd bowl game to find out.
This year: 9-3 (5-3) in the SEC West.
