Steve Kragthorpe Steps Down

The one thing that kept the LSU from something greater than a win over Alabama and a Cotton Bowl victory boiled down to one thing. Gary Crowton. Crowton’s offense was ugly on almost all levels for most of the year. And the luckiest break for LSU was that Maryland went with a coach who gave him a golden parachute.

Not to say that LSU fans were thrilled in regards to the hiring of Steve Kragthorpe, but that being said? He had success long after Tim Rattay was winging the ball around the WAC. And there was hope that Jordan Jefferson was going to build on his Cotton Bowl performance.

Which made this news all the more surprising.

Kragthorpe stepped down as offensive coordinator yesterday after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s is a disease that effects movement, coordination, and can cause difficulty walking. So it goes without saying that Kragthorpe cannot continue his duties in regards to gameplanning and all that.

Though he isn’t retiring, this does mark the second major health issue he has had to deal with in the past two years. He was Texas A&M’s receivers coach before his wife was diagnosed with MS and heart problems.

As for LSU? This throws the offense firmly back into a question mark. And while Cliff Harris is out for Oregon week one? Nobody knows quite how Greg Sundawa is going to run things.
