SEC Prediction Picks in Brief. Week One, featuring ECU vs. South Carolina
You people just might be sick of me by the end of this week. I am planning on finding my way through seven more posts between now and Saturday. And as I’m reading older comments, I have a tendency to stumble into troll bait.
But coming of a 51-44 record in calling games last year? I’m going to start with a new series of predictions from week to week. We’re starting with the games of lesser importance.
Of course, we’ll let Arkansas, Tennessee and Vanderbilt go. They’re playing FCS teams. Sure an upset could happen, but I’m not feeling nearly saucy enough to call out SW Missouri State, Montana, or an Elon for a shocking of the world.
Kentucky -19 at Western Kentucky
While Bobby Rainey has a tendency to be hyperproductive, Kentucky’s offensive line returns and defensive line should be able to push back against the Hilltoppers. It’s not a narattive setter, but the Wildcats win with ease 38-14.
Mississippi State -29 at Memphis
With the momentum of destroying Michigan to end their year, and with the power of their defensive line going against the morass of Memphis’ offense from last year. This is a guaranteed crush for the Bulldogs. 42-0.
Utah State +21 at Auburn
Not for nothing, but Utah State returns basically the entire offense that went to Norman last year and nearly came out with one of the upsets of the decade. You have Auburn looking ahead to Mississippi State. Utah State puts a couple of drives together, but they don’t have the defense to win outright. Aggies cover but lose, 38-21.
Alabama -38 vs. Kent State
Roosevelt Nix may find a way to get multiple sacks, but with Duron Carter’s eligibilty settled? This is the most body bag of body bag games between two teams in the same division. Alabama destroys them 51-3.
Florida -35 vs. Florida Atlantic
I was thinking this was going to be the body bag game that turns out to be terrible for the home team, but a Sun Belt team that allowed more yardage per play than Florida garnered and only returning five starters? The Owls will be broken badly. 45-7 Gators.
BYU -3 at Ole Miss
If I had ANY reason to believe in Ole Miss passing, I’d call for the minor home upset. But BYU’s defense was great in the second half of the year, and Jake Demps will have time to throw. BYU 31-21.
(And it doesn’t matter if I changed this from my preview.)
South Carolina -20.5 at ECU
In regards to passing games? ECU can throw the ball, and South Carolina has had trouble stopping passing games. But that being said? ECU’s veteran defensive line allowed over 5 yards per carry last year, and South Carolina’s going to be able to wreak some havoc against ECU’s inexperienced offensive line. Take the Gamecocks, and enjoy Marcus Lattimore going for 200 yards. South Carolina 55; ECU 24.
