Auburn vs. Mississippi State, Prediction Pick 2011
The cockroach-like tenacity of Auburn allowed them to save some face against Utah State. You could say that they were looking ahead to this one. You could say that this is the game that they’re gonna show their real selves.
And I would say that it’s fair, but I’m not sure the real Auburn is that much better.
Because here’s the thing. Auburn’s defense was rather ugly. A true freshman quarterback passed for 213 yards against their defense in an SEC Stadium against that SEC Speed. Auburn’s defense just couldn’t get off the field on third down. I mean, I thought Utah State’s offense was going to do some things, but that was ridiculous.
And when Mississippi State comes to town? You have a team that’s like Utah State on offense writ large. Sure, Memphis football is just like a tire fire, but when you have an offense that ran and threw for over 300 yards? The tag team of Chris Reif and Vick Ballard must look like the Road Warriors after Chickie Keeton, Robert Turpin, and Kerwyn Williams demolished their defense. Mississippi State is going to score points.
And here’s the other thing that makes me feel like this could be where the window officially slams shut on the Tigers. Phil Steele graded Utah State as the worst defensive line in the WAC. And Auburn’s running game with Dyer and McCalebb couldn’t even manage 80 yards rushing or three yards an attempt.
With Fletcher Cox’s return from suspension, this was a defensive line that was pretty decent last season. It was one of the only defenses that really slowed down Auburn last year, and when you consider the offensive state Mississippi State was in at that point last year? You have to like the Bulldogs chances here.
Now I know there is a question of the trap game. LSU comes to Starkville next Thursday. It’s going to be the largest game since Jackie Sherill didn’t give two hoots about NCAA violations. And as such? They will probably lose a touchdown by that.
But they, for lack of a better term? Still got this.
Mississippi State 45, Auburn 34.
