Alabama vs. Arkansas, Prediction Pick 2011
This is the sort of game you can call the stepping up in weight class bowl. I’ve been railing on Arkansas and their poor schedule so far, but then again, Penn State is not exactly going to contend for anything beyond seven wins and a Texas Bowl. Alabama hasn’t been challenged by a team either. Can Arkansas step up and go get somebody got?
Well the fact of the matter is if the plan is to attack the side with Mitch Smothers. I mean, he’s a true freshman, playing right tackle, with Courtey Upshaw and Donta Hightower saying they’re coming for him? That’s a challenge for a Cordy Glenn or a Bradley Sowell. Big problem for the Razorbacks.
A smaller problem? Jake Bequette. He missed the Troy game with a sore hamstring, and as I type this, he’s still questionable. He’s the Razorbacks best pass rusher. If he can’t go? A good defense will miss him, and the tag team of Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy will find the holes just a little bit larger.
But that being said? Arkansas has a very dangerous return game. They’re getting 33 yards per kick return, and are on pace to get a return for six in every game. Joe Adams has the punt returns, and Marquel Wade has the kicks.
So what does it all boil down to? Efficiency. Both teams are averaging a lost turnover per game. Both teams have given up more sacks than they’ve achieved. And both teams have allowed more tackles for loss than they’ve achieved.
And as an aside? Alabama had five trips in the red zone versus North Texas. They ended up with 13 points. That just can’t happen if they’re going to crush the Razorbacks.
So what does it all boil down to? Arkansas gets a return and manages to keep it interesting for a half of football. But Alabama makes the necessary halftime adjustments and gets a strong win.
