SEC Power Poll Week 5.

Marcus Lattimore is a one man riot squad.

SEC Power Poll Week 5.

In regards to tiers? We’ve actually pretty much locked down these teams pretty well. My worst call for the season looks like Mississippi State. My best call for the season still seems to be Georgia rallying from the slow start. But from 1 to 12, how does it stand?

1. LSU (The gold standard. Between the ballhawking defense, the solid special teams, the strong running game, and the passing game that’s efficient? Until they get beat or start winning with a lot worse performances, they reside here.)
2. Florida (Alabama does have the better resume. So if you want them here, I’ll read your power poll, and nod in understanding. But Florida is better statistically. We’ll find out just how foolish this is soon enough.)
3. Alabama (Like I said. They’re 2B. They beat two ranked teams (though Penn State seems like a body bag game, and Arkansas was missing their best defender) and are right up there with Florida statistically.)
4. South Carolina (They are their own tier. Seems as if the defensive line woke up. Marcus Lattimore is going to win the Heisman. But how far can South Carolina really go without a quarterback? And is Alshon Jeffrey ever going to show up?)
5. Georgia (I know, it’s Ole Miss and Coastal Carolina. But like I said to start with, this is the schedule of a 9 win team, and the line seems to be jelling as the year goes on.)
6. Arkansas (Stat-wise, Auburn and Mississippi State have been playing better. But even despite the inability to take care of the ball, and the troubles on the line. Putting any other team here does not pass the smell test.)
7. Auburn (When the 107th ranked defense from the Sun Belt holds your offense to 24 points? That’s a problem. In fact, the only reason this isn’t the incontrovertibly worst defense in the SEC again is because Tennessee had a bye week. The schedule gets so much tougher, and the bottom? It’s gonna fall out.)
8. Mississippi State (Okay, it’s official. The offensive line is a mess. With Tobias Smith gone, defenses can sell out on the run up the middle and attempt to make Chris Reif beat them. More often than not? It’s gonna work.)
9. Vanderbilt (Back to reality. I was blind to the problems that the offensive line was having. They’re still good enough to get to six wins. But seven is a bridge too far.)
10. Tennessee (This was where they were last week. They did nothing. They cannot climb out of this hole until they advance.)
11. Kentucky (After 4 games, this is a team that’s given up 34 tackles for loss. They’ve only managed 19. It’s indicative of just how terrible this team is. And yet, they could still win five games. BCS SCHEDULING! WHOO!)
12. Ole Miss (If the preseason #1 kicker doesn’t mess around and miss three field goals, and Georgia was ready for Ole Miss attempting deception? It would have been a 30 point blowout. If Houston Nutt doesn’t win in Fresno? Mike Leach could be ready in moments.)

I will put up my Alabama-Florida call early in the week. I will put up the future conference match-up of Texas A&M-Arkansas later in the week. And if I’m feeling saucy? I may throw up a Georgia-Mississippi State call or an Auburn-South Carolina.
