Does Jeff Demps break one?
Alabama at Florida, Prediction Pick 2011
Ina game that wasn’t supposed to have near the amount of cachet as it does coming into the weekend, we have Alabama rolling into Ben Hill Griffin Stadium facing a Gators team that seems like it’s restored the roar of a National Championship Caliber team. But when your biggest win was against a wounded Tennessee, the reputation is something else. Can Florida mesh perception with reputation?
Short answer? Yes. This is going to be a brutal matchup. Both teams are coming into the game with Top 5 defenses. And when you consider that both offenses are so run-centric? There will not be much room for any of Chris Rainey, Eddie Lacy, Trent Richardson, or Jeff Demps.
Though the thing that you have to worry about is that Florida is inexperienced on the offensive line. The Gators went into the season with a total of 26 combined starts on the offensive line. And even if C.J. Moseley isn’t going to be able to go, there will be pressure. Pressure that Alabama will be able to better handle.
Though that being said? Even with Jeremy Brown probably not going to play, Alabama isn’t going to do very much passing either. Marquis Maze is basically the extent of Alabama’s passing game. Their #2 receiver (Arguably Kenny Bell) is averaging under 2 catches for 19 yards per game.
So you know what it might boil down to? Florida’s discipline problems. The invaluable cfbstats.com has them as allowing the most first downs via penalty. It’s an average of three per game. And in a game that seems to tack as a close and brutal battle, any drive extended is a drive that could prove to be disastrous.
One last bullet point, it’s rare that field goals could win a game, but Caleb Sturgis is converting everything, and in a game where points are at a premium. He just might prove to be the difference.
But while I’m willing to discuss the matter of Florida winning, it boils down to who’s defense and offensive line you trust more. And as it stands? It’s a big road win for the Crimson Tide. Alabama 16, Florida 14.
