Mississippi State vs. Georgia Prediction Pick, 2011
I know, you’d think Auburn versus South Carolina would be my prediction call. But you’re wrong. This was a bellwether for the state of both teams last year, and it promises to be the same this year. One team got a New Years Day Bowl. One team lost to Central Florida in the Autozone. This year, will the roles be reversed?
Well, the first thing you have to realize is that the while the Bulldogs aren’t as good as an LSU or an Alabama on defense? They are tough as nails. They’re currently 6th in yards per attempt and 8th against the pass, 19th in yards allowed per play, 20th in tackles for loss, and that combines to make a package of a 13th best defense. So, you can expect the team of Ballard and Reif to attempt to run the ball 50 times. It’s still their best way to move the ball, even despite the patchwork nature of the offensive line.
That being said? Mississippi State’s problems at stopping the run are very real. Isaiah Crowell has made his bones running the ball over these last three weeks and I will call for the firing of Mike Bobo if he does not go for over 100 yards. He best have a day.
Because if he doesn’t and they bog down? Georgia’s situation turns very questionable. Mississippi State has only had half of their opponents red zone visits turn out for touchdowns, and maybe there was an aberration with Blair Walsh’s performance last week? But if he misses a field goal or 3 again? That leads to trouble.
But that’s the only way Mississippi State can win this. Georgia’s defense is strong, and Mississippi State will be kicking a bunch of Field Goals. Aaron Murray will throw for 2 TD’s, Isaiah Crowell will get one. Blair Walsh will get a field goal. And Mississippi State will get three field goals and a Vick Ballard TD.
In short, Mississippi State gets into the zone.
